PETER AND SUZANNA MONZYK FAMILY

Peter and Suzanna Monzyk, both of Polish descent, were born in Silesia, Prussia.  Silesia is a region located in the southwestern area of Poland.  Prussia was a large and powerful German military state that ruled Silesia at that time.  Throughout Polish history from the 14th century on, different areas of their land was invaded or annexed by other countries the Taters (early Mongols), Germans, Swedes, Turks, Russians, and Austrians.  A succession of heroic efforts, sometimes victorious but often tragic, were made to repel the invaders.  Silesia originally belonged to the Kingdom of Poland, but in about the 14th century it became a part of the Holy Roman Empire.  Then it was annexed to Bohemia and eventually controlled by Austria.  In 1740, Prussia invaded Silesia and took it from Austria.  Peter and Suzanna Monzyk were born in the Silesia area of old Poland when it was under Prussian (German) rule.  By the end of the eighteenth century, Prussia, Russia, and Austria took over the rest of the land, and Poland ceased to exist as a nation.  It wasn't until after World War I in 1920 that all of Poland was returned to an independent nation.  Though these conquered people of Silesia had been under Prussian (German) rule for nearly 200 years and could speak German, they were Polish by nationality.  They never gave up their Polish customs or their language.

Peter Monzyk, his wife and two‑year old daughter, Frances, arrived in Washington, MO in November 1867.  Peter Monzyk's obituary states he lived in the Washington Area for three years, then in the New Haven area before saving some money to buy his farm in Cloverbottom.  In checking old Franklin County records, we find that Peter Monzyk signed a contract to rent an 85 acre farm (50 acres in cultivation) from Joseph Bauman in the Beouf Township (near New Haven).  The contract was for a four year period beginning March 1874.  The first year rent was $175 and $200 for each succeeding year.  Old county atlas maps show a Joseph Bauman owned an 80 acre farm north of the junction of Hwy KK and Meyer Road.  Perhaps, this may be the area where Peter Monzyk and his young family lived for a while.  In 1878, a copy of a Deed of Trust shows that Peter Monzyk bought a 60 acre farm in the Cloverbottom area.  He later added 40 more acres to have a total of 100+ acres bordering on the St. John's Creek.  A large settlement of Polish people from Silesia lived in the Cloverbottom area (This Monzyk farm on the east side of County Road AJ, south of Cloverbottom is presently owned by Dale Brinker).  Owning land gave him the rights of citizenship.  Peter Monzyk became an American citizen on April 29, 1895.  Peter Monzyk farmed from morning till night to raise the necessities of life for himself, his wife and family of 10 children.  Their children were

Their fourth child, Francis Theodore, born in 1872 died at an early age (date unknown).  Their tenth child, Francis Anthony, born in 1886 was so named in memory of this son.  Another son, Theophil, died in 1905 from wounds caused by "fireworks.  The mother, Suzanna, died in 1909.  By this time, two of the daughters were in the convent; five children were married except the youngest son, Frank.  When Frank married in 1912, he and his wife, Bertha, continued to live on the family farm, caring for his father, who had become blind in his latter years.  Peter died in 1925 of acute bronchitis.  Both Peter and his wife Suzanna are buried in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cloverbottom, MO.  Peter's death certificate lists his parents as ELEXANDER MONZYK and MARY ZUREK.  Suzanna’s mother’s name may be CAJETANI SISKA (see page 34 for this information).

There are 737 direct descendants listed of Peter and Suzanna Monzyk.  A few listed are step‑children).  There are probably additional offspring since I started collecting data in 1991 and 1992.  I hope I've correctly recorded the dates that were sent me.

While researching our family tree, some memories of our past have been recalled by different family members, and I would like to share them with you.

TONY MURPHY

His mother, Julia Piezuch Murphy, often told him this interesting story.  When Peter and Susana Monzyk with their daughter, Frances, came to America, they also brought along Susana's widowed mother and Susana's sister, Carolina Bula.  Carolina Bula was the baptismal sponsor for Agnes Monzyk, the second child of Peter and Susana, but their first one born in America,  (with this information I started checking the records at St. Francis Borgia Church and found that Joannes (John) Bala, husband of Carolina a Bula died in 1869 in his 56th year.  In 1870, Carolina Bula, his widow, had remarried a man by the name of Francis Gomoluh.  In that marriage record, it states that Carolina Bula was the daughter of Cajetani Siska.  So Susana Monzyk’s mother may be CAJETANI SISKA.  Although the surnames are different, Pax and Siska, maybe Susana’s mother had been married a second time to a Siska.  There have been many variations of all these last names in different entries of church records.

Pax is sometimes spelled POCS, PYKS.  Siska is sometimes spelled SYSKA, ZYSKA SISKA. Sometimes the capital S looks like a Capital P in the Germanic script.  Susana Monzyk’s burial record states her name as Joannes (Johanna) Monzyk, wife of Peter Monzyk.  Her tombstone reads 1907 instead of 1909.  Her first name has also been spelled Gusanna.   Early spellings of Monzyk in church records have been MZYK, SMCK, ZMYK, MSYK, SMYCK, ZMYK, MZMYK, MONSIK, MUNSIC, MONZYCK, MONSYCK, MSCK.  Eventually we became known as MONZYK.)

TONY MURPHY

Regarding Theophil Monzyk:  His mother Julia Piezuch Murphy, told him that he died at the age of 21 years after an accident with fireworks.  They held him up to a stove to treat the burns in an effort to help him.  The idea that like attracts like.  The fire would draw out the heat of the burn.

TONY MURPHY

Peter and Frank Monzyk would, visit Agnes and Peter Piezuch, also Frances and Albert Guzy in Tea, MO about once a year.  Peter could speak German and Polish.  Ted Piezuch was told that in the old country after the wheat harvest was done, Peter Monzyk and some of the other Polish men would take their wheat cradles (scythes) and pay to cross the border at night into Russia to work.  They had to sleep in the fields, but they were paid much more than at home for the same work.  This money earned their way for the trip to America.

When Julia Piezuch Murphy was young, her sisters and brothers attended schools in walking distances, but at around the age of 11 or 12, they west two years to Catholic school in Owensville.  They lived in town in dormitory‑style quarters over the classrooms.  Bad weather sometimes prevented wagon travel, and they could not get home for the weekends.  Contributions were made in the form of flour, oats, ham, bacon, chickens and the like for board.

The Peter Piezuch family would get a large, thin wafer of unleavened bread (I believe it's called "oblatek") from the priest or the nuns on the Sunday before Christmas.  On Christmas Eve after the dinner dishes had been cleared away (they would eat no meat), it would be broken into pieces and put in a plate on the table.  They would gather around.  Each took a portion, and they would then sing Christmas songs in Polish.  Afterward they would go to the cedar tree in the living room, which the children had decorated with strings of popcorn and popcorn balls, and the adults would light the candles on the tree for a brief time, and stand by.  Each child would fold a shirt or a dress, leave it on the kitchen table, then make sure a couple ears of corn were left outside a side door.  The corn was for the donkey, which pulled the cart bearing the Christ‑child, who brought them gifts they found in their garments the next morning.

On New Year’s Day they had herring with the dinner.  If smoked or dried, (not pickled, that is) it would be soaked overnight.

On Holy Saturday each child dug a shallow hole in the garden and lined it with grass.  The Easter rabbit would put in dyed eggs, covered with more grass, for the next morning.  The eggs were dyed by boiling them with beets, green wheat stalks, or onion skins.

TED PIEZUCH

His grandfather, Peter Monzyk, told him they would go into the forests to find wood for heating and cooking.  If there was snow on the ground, they would drag a heavy tree branch behind them to wipe out their footprints as they walked to their home.   They were afraid they would be tracked and robbed.

THELMA JONES

Her grandmother, Frances Monzyk Guzy, told here on the voyage over here, they ate their beans spooned onto a wooden bench or stool.  The ocean was very rough and the plates would slide off.

CHRISTINE KLUBA LEYKAM

Sr. Hilaria told her that her father, Peter Monzyk, took her to the motherhouse in St. Louis, MO. in a spring wagon.  It took two days to reach St. Louis.  They stayed overnight in Pacific, MO. She remembered looking back as long and far as the eye would see as they rode away from her home and family.

Her mother, Anna Kluba, told her that before Susanna Monzyk's death, she was ill with open draining wounds on her legs.  Anna had to clean and dress these wounds on her mother.  Being pregnant with her second child, Alphonse, she became nauseated and ill.  She and her husband had to move to Washington with her brother John and his family, leaving the care of her mother to other family members.

FLORA MONZYK SCHROEPHER

Because Grandpa Peter Monzyk was blind for several years, her father, Frank Monzyk, had to set up a rope pole fence and a plank walk so Grandpa could guide himself to the "outhouse" and other places in the yard.  Knowing that their grandpa was blind, Melvin and Flora would go up to him and tell him that one was the other, thinking he would not know the difference.  Grandpa would tousle their hair and smile, calling them "my Florinka and my Melvinka".

MARY MONZYK STUCKENSCHNEIDER

Since they did not have a car, her father, Theodore Monzyk, would rent a horse and buggy on a Sunday.  He would take some of the family out to Cloverbottom to visit Grandfather Peter Monzyk.  She remembers he was blind and generally sat in a chair in the back bedroom.

HELEN MONZYK GREENSTREET

She remembers playing in the yard with her other cousins at grandpa's house.  They got all excited watching and counting the cows as they came by the fence.  Grandpa had been sitting quietly on the steps with his eyes squinted shut.  They thought he was sleeping when suddenly he let out a great laugh, being amused at his grandchildren.

Another time she remembers being out at Uncle Frank's visiting grandpa.  After the meal, Aunt Bertha threw the dishwater out in the yard.  The dishrag had accidentally been thrown out too, and a great big hound jumped at it and swallowed

BERNICE HAGGIN

Her mother, Anne Guzy Haggin, told her this story.  Peter Monzyk told her that he had to fight in wars in his country before he came to America,  (this may have been the Austro‑Prussian War fought in 1866. Prussia provoked a war with Austria in order to oust them out of the German confederation.  The war lasted seven weeks.  Sometimes the peasants were obliged to serve in the military about 7 or 8 months a year.)

DELIA MONZYK MARTIN

Grandpa would drive a farm wagon of wheat to the mill in Washington, taking Roman and her along.  Sometimes they stopped at Uncle "Teddo" or Aunt Annie, but lots of times they would stop at a saloon before going home.  They had to stay in the wagon.  When he came out. Grandpa would give them one large white peppermint candy.  They knew he had more in his pockets, so she and her brother would feel out his clothing when he hung them up.  Sometimes they were lucky and found the rest of the candy.

BELLA MONZYK MARTIN

She remembers Grandpa Peter Monzyk having to watch the oven as the bread baked.  Her mother, Bertha, would put the bread pans into the oven of the old wood range and then go about her work.  Grandpa would then pull up a chair in front of the oven to watch the temperature gauge so it wouldn't get too hot while the bread baked.  She also recalls having to be in a procession at church in the evening and having to wear a white dress and stockings.  Her father couldn't drive her to church that night, so Grandpa took her brother Roman and her, walking a short‑cut through the woods.  When they returned home that evening, she had to walk first holding the lantern with Grandpa following her, using her white stockings to guide him.  She remembers it being a very scary trip.  She recalls a woodbox in the back room which was Grandpa's bedroom.  He didn't like it if her Pop or the children bought in the wood.  Grandpa wanted to be independent

When she was about 10 years old, she went out to Uncle Frank's farm to help Aunt Bertha watch the baby.  It was thrashing time and Aunt Bertha had to fix the meals for the thrashing crew.  She recalls Grandpa coming into the house at around dusk.  He would stand in front of a large picture of the Blessed Mother, The Black Madonna of Czestochowa, take his brown rosary beads from his pocket and quietly pray.  She also remembers being out there when they celebrated the feast of Corpus Christ.  There was a large procession through the fields around church, having Benediction at three different stops.  She was walking with Grandpa Monzyk as he loudly sang in Polish the hymn "I love thee 0 Mary, To thee do I sing"

Ralph Gregory, a local Franklin County historian, recalled a custom he saw when he was lining in the Cloverbottom area in the 1940's.  It was called Dyngus. On Easter Monday, a boy sneaked up behind a girl with a bucket of water and poured it over her.  The girl in turn would return the favor,  (in reading about Polish customs, I learned this.

"On Easter Monday, SMIGUS DYNGUS, People drenched on another with water to evoke the rains needed for spring sowing.  A pretty girl is especially vulnerable to this capricious tradition.  Boys may even wait on the roof of her house ready to dump a bucket of water on her the minute she appeared."

Mr. Gregory also noted that these Catholic people were "deeply religious" with close ties to the Catholic Church.  He also thought they had a special meal on the Saturday before Easter.  (In reading about old Polish customs, I learned that on Holy Saturday, samples of the food to be eaten at the Special Easter Eve meal, were taken to church in baskets to be blessed — breads, ham, sausages, cheese, fruits, salt, eggs, cakes.)
